Blog #1 - Why I chose this course and my favorite film/food film
I have many favorite things in this world, and two of those things just happen to be food and movies. I love food, especially good food that I can really enjoy, and one of my favorite activities to do is to go to the movies. Movies that involve some aspect of food also interest me, because I enjoy watching people cook. I also enjoy looking at good food in films because it makes me want to try the food that is being shown. A lot of the time when scenes center around food, or take place in a restaurant, those scenes are usually memorable for me, because they are either entertaining, or contain “big movie moments.” This is why I decided to take this course. The title and the course description drew me in instantly when my advisor read both to me. I could connect to two of the ideas that the course was about, food and film.

My favorite film, that can also be considered as a food film is A Cinderella Story, staring Hilary Duff and Chad Michael Murray. This is my favorite movie because it puts a twist on a classic fairytale. I am also a huge fan of romantic comedies and love stories, and I love the love story that it creates. It is also super entertaining and funny. In my opinion, A Cinderella Story, has many moving parts that all come together to create this happily ever after ending. I know just about every line of this movie from beginning to end. It is a classic to me now. One of the central settings of this movie is “Fiona’s” diner. This is where the main character Sam, works. The dinner sets the scene for multiple prominent moments in this movie. We see food being served, food being eaten by customers, and food being prepared by cooks. For some reason, salmon is highly emphasized throughout the film.

Salmon! It is being tested out in multiple dishes that are being served in the diner because Fiona is now on a Salmon diet.
In the diner, we also see the family that Sam created with those she works with, we see how she is treated by her classmates because she works at the diner, we see her being vulnerable with the guy of her dreams, and we see her finally stand up to her stepmother. If I had to give a synopsis of this movie to someone, the diner and its’ importance would definitely be a part of it. There is just so much that I love about this film, and it will always be one of my favorites.

                                             The End. Reel  Food and World Cinema . A course  where I learned about food films. A course   that showed me  how much of a role ,  food  can  truly play  within a film.  After looking at and rereading all the  blogs that I wrote this semester, it was another reminder of all that  we have done, and all that  I  have  learned.   We have watched  several  different movies  throughout the semester, from American to foreign films. M ost of the  films,  I probably would have never heard of nor watched, if it was not for me being in this class.   What we  watched  throughout the course   broadened  my horizons fo r  what movies I would usually go for.  The Culture and Chocolate Behind Chocolat  published by Amara Foster The film Chocolat , a film that I really enjoyed. did not leave the greatest taste in my mouth when it came to me learning about French culture. At least the French culture that is represented in this small village. This film taught me that the French are super religious Catholics. It’s almost like they live and breathe their religion. Anyone that strays away from the “normal path” of this Catholic society is looked at as a non-believer. They are looked at as constant sinners. The villagers are basically told to shun these people and look at them in the worst way possible. I am not a fan of this kind treatment. I understand that this is a Catholic society, and there are specific beliefs, “rules” and expectations to the religion. But I don’t like how differences are not accepted.
